Model atmosphere analysis of the extreme DQ white dwarf GSC2U J131147.2+292348

چکیده
A new model atmosphere analysis for the peculiar DQ white dwarf discovered by Carollo et al. (2002) is presented. The effective temperature and carbon abundance have been estimated by fitting both the photometric data (UBJVRFINJHK) and a low resolution spectrum (3500 < λ < 7500 Å) with a new model grid for helium-rich white dwarfs with traces of carbon (DQ stars). We estimate Teff ' 5120±200 K and log[C/He]' −5.8±0.5, which make GSC2U J131147.2+292348 the coolest DQ star ever observed. This result indicates that the hypothetical transition from C2 to C2H molecules around Teff = 6000 K, which was inferred to explain the absence of DQ stars at lower temperatures, needs to be reconsidered.

Detailed Spectroscopic and Photometric Analysis of DQ White Dwarfs
We present an analysis of spectroscopic and photometric observations of cool DQ white dwarfs based on improved model atmosphere calculations. In particular , we revise the atmospheric parameters of the trigonometric parallax sample of Bergeron, Leggett, & Ruiz, and discuss the astrophysical implications on the temperature scale and mean mass, as well as the chemical evolution of these stars. We...
متن کاملEvolutionary calculations of carbon dredge-up in helium envelope white dwarfs
We investigate the evolution of cooling helium atmosphere white dwarfs using a full evolutionary code, specifically developed for following the effects of element diffusion and gravitational settling on white dwarf cooling. The major difference between this work and previous work is that we use more recent opacity data from the OPAL project. Since, in general, these opacities are higher than th...
متن کاملThe Halo White Dwarf WD 0346+246 Revisited
The extreme helium-rich atmospheric composition determined for the halo white dwarf WD 0346+246 is reexamined. This solution is shown to be improbable from an astrophysical point of view when accretion of hydrogen and metals from the interstellar medium is taken into account. An alternate solution is proposed where hydrogen and helium are present in the atmospheric regions in equal amounts. The...
متن کاملγ)O from White Dwarf Seismology
For many years, astronomers have promised that the study of pulsating white dwarfs would ultimately lead to useful information about the physics of matter under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. We can now make good on that promise. Using observational data from the Whole Earth Telescope and a new analysis method employing a genetic algorithm, we empirically determine the central ...

White dwarf stars are traditionally found to have surface compositions made primarily of hydrogen or helium. However, a new family has recently been uncovered, the so-called hot DQ white dwarfs, which have surface compositions dominated by carbon and oxygen with little or no trace of hydrogen and helium (Dufour et al. 2007, 2008, 2010). Deriving precise atmospheric parameters for these objects ...
